OCCUPATIONAL HAZARDS: Sreekumar, an employee of the Kottarakara Abkari Court who suffered burn injuries, at the Kollam district hospital
KOLLAM: Two employees of the Abkari Court at Kottarakara suffered serious burns while burning a heap of plastic cans. The employees, identified as Sreekumar, 28 and Pramod, 26, were rushed to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital. The incident took place at 3 p.m. on Thursday within the court complex. The cans were material objects in abkari cases for which trial had been completed and the verdicts delivered. Though the cans were emptied earlier, they contained small amounts of spirit. The court had ordered that the cans be destroyed. Accordingly, a pit was dug and the cans were dumped into it. As the heap of cans was set on fire, they immediately exploded throwing fire splinters to all sides. Some fell on Sreekumar and Pramod who were standing by the pit. Their colleagues rushed them to the district hospital here. Since their condition was serious, they were referred to the Medical College Hospital. The Kottarakara Police registered a case. A similar incident had taken place eleven years ago in the Kollam East Police station complex when cans, material objects in another case, were being destroyed in the same manner.
