7.5 lakh acres more to be irrigated

KADAPA: The Government will provide irrigation to an additional 7.50 lakh acres, including one lakh acres under Srisailam right bank canal this year, according to Secretary, Irrigation and Command Area Development, Rajeev Ranjan Misra.

An ayacut of 1.70 lakh acres in four districts would be irrigated through Telugu Ganga project, Mr. Misra said at Brahmamgari Matham on Wednesday. It would irrigate 50,000 acres in Kadapa, 70,000 acres in Nellore and 25,000 acres each in Kurnool and Chittoor districts.

Storage of 17 tmcft of water would be tried in Brahmamsagar reservoir while the present storage of 7.50 tmcft would be enhanced to 12 tmcft, he said.

Somasila reservoir was being fed 10 tmcft of floodwater through the Pennar and 2.75 tmcft was being sent to Poondi reservoir to meet drinking water needs of Chennai, Mr. Misra said.
