Special trains for Navarathri festival

Thiruvananthapuram: Southern Railway will run special trains between Thiruvananthapuram and Mangalore to clear the extra rush during the Navarathri festival. A press release said train no. 0688 will leave Thiruvananthapuram Central at 7.25 p.m. on Friday and reach Mangalore at 9.15 a.m. the next day. Train no. 0687 will leave Mangalore at 10 a.m. on Monday and reach here at 12.15 p.m. the next day. The trains will stop at Varkala, Kollam, Kayamkulam, Haripad, Ambalapuzha, Alappuzha, Mararikulam, Cherthala, Thuravur, Ernakulam Junction, Aluva, Thrissur, Shoranur, Kuttipuram, Tirur, Kozhikode, Koyilandy, Vadakara, Mahe, Thalassery, Kannur, Payyannur, Cheruvathur, Kanhangad and Kasaragod. — Staff Reporter

Fee concession for OECs

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government has issued an order to extend fee concession to students belonging to the Other Eligible Communities (OEC) who join professional courses, Education Minister M.A. Baby has said. Replying to a submission by T.N. Prathapan in the Assembly on Thursday, Mr. Baby said the Self-Financing Colleges Act, 2006, did not have the provision to give fee concession to OEC students and it was rectified through an order on September 15. "OEC students are now eligible for the concession given to SC/ST students," he said. — Special Correspondent

Licence renewed

PALAKKAD: Weeks after the Kerala High Court quashed the Government order banning Pepsi and Coca Cola in the State, the cola giants had got manufacturing licence for one of its biggest plants at Plachimada near here. The Perumatty panchayat, where the cola plant is situated, had decided to renew the licence to the Coke for three months on 13 conditions. The panchayat council also said the licence would be cancelled if the company did not adhere to the conditions. It said the licence was being renewed taking into account of the High Court order and also other relevant situations from the recent past. - UNI

Ticket checking drive

Thiruvananthapuram: As many as 557 cases of ticket less and illegal travelling and 492 cases of unbooked luggage were detected in a three-day special ticket checking drive carried out in the Thiruvananthapuram division from September 20. A sum of Rs.2,25,884 was collected towards fare and penalty during the drive led by Senior Divisional Commercial Manager K. Manoj. — Staff Reporter

Two arrested

KOTTAYAM: Two persons were arrested in connection with the robbery of 19.5 kg of jewellery at Pulickal Kavala about 20 km from here on Tuesday, sources said. The jewellery had also been recovered, they said. The arrests were made in Kochi and the accused would be brought to Kottayam. — Staff Reporter

Suryayoga centre

KOCHI: The headquarters of the Suryatmasamyoga Mission will be opened at Thrikkakara by the Suryayoga guru Surya Thejaswi on Friday. The mission will give free training in Suryayoga to people of all faiths and classes, according to the mission's trustee Somasundaran Nair. He said suryayoga was a technique to draw energy from the sun for physical and mental healing. - Special Correspondent

Ahamed's removal sought

KOZHIKODE: Yuva Morcha will petition the Prime Minister and the President demanding removal of Union Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahamed from the Union Ministry for his alleged involvement with Hilal Muhammed, who was allegedly involved in the Marad violence, Morcha State president K. Surendran has said.The organisation will soon launch an agitation demanding ouster of Mr. Ahamed, Mr. Surendran said. Muhammed, who is a native of Chavakkad in Thrissur district, was contacted by Mr. Ahamed before and after the massacre, he alleged. — Staff Reporter
