MLA's election upheld by High Court

HYDERABAD: The election of Congress MLA from the Palamaneru Assembly constituency in Chittoor district was upheld by Justice L. Narasimha Reddy of the High Court on Thursday. The judge was dismissing a petition filed by Tippeswamy of the TDP who had lost the election. He contended that the elected candidate did not belong to the Schedule Caste. - Legal Correspondent

State not to buy unmanned aircraft

HYDERABAD: The State Government has decided to purchase a second helicopter for use of VIPs as well as for combing operations against naxalites and other extremist groups. Stating this to reporters here on Thursday, Home Minister K. Jana Reddy, however, said that there was no plan as of now to purchase an unmanned flying aircraft for combing operations which was planned sometime ago. - Special Correspondent

Girl strangled to death

KURNOOL: A four-year-old girl Sirisha was strangled to death allegedly by her mother and her boyfriend here on Thrusday. According to reports, Laxmi Devi, a divorcee, and her boyfriend, an autorickshaw driver who wanted to get married, allegedly murdered the girl considering her a hurdle to their marriage. - Staff Reporter

Lightning claims lives of four persons

Srikakulam: Four persons were killed as thunderbolt struck at two different places in the district. In Sundarada of Narasanppeta mandal, three women working in a paddy field were killed when thunderbolt struck. One P. Nagaraju (16) of Bavarajupalem in Ranasthalam was also killed by thunderbolt. Two bullocks were also killed. There was intermittent rain in some parts of the district on Thursday. - Special Correspondent

Three drowned

KARIMNAGAR: Three persons were drowned in Manair vagu on the shores of LMD reservoir on the outskirts of Karimnagar when they went for fishing on Wednesday night. Police sources said they had been identified as B. Pedda Veeresham (25), B. Srinivas (22) and B Chinna Veeresham (20), all natives of Bommakal in Karimnagar mandal. The trio was trapped in the swirling waters following the release of floodwaters from the reservoir. - Staff Reporter

Court summons Vizag Municipal Commissioner

HYDERABAD: Commissioner of Greater Visakha Municipal Corporation Srikanth has been directed by the High Court to appear in person on October 23 to answer to the charges of contempt of court. The Bench took a serious view when it was brought to the notice of the court that the corporation continued with constructions, near Ramakrishna beach, in spite of the stay orders. - Legal Correspondent

Plea for commuting Afzal's death sentence

HYDERABAD: The Human Rights Forum is planning to conduct a campaign for commuting to life imprisonment the death sentence imposed on Mohammed Afzal for the attack on Parliament. General secretary K. Balagopal and vice-president S. Jeevan Kumar said in a press release on Thursday that death penalty was an archaic punishment which ought to have no place in civilised penal law. - Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The High Court will remain closed for Dasara vacation from October 3 to 6, according to a press release here. During the vacation, all matters of urgent nature will be heard by three judges — Justices T.Ch. Surya Rao, R. JNTU teacher gets award

ANANTAPUR: Air-India has chosen K. Hemachandra Reddy, a professor in mechanical engineering of JNTU College of Engineering here, for district runners-up BOLT award for 2006-07 as part of its BOLT awards given to meritorious students and teachers every year. TIRUMALA: Chennai-based Hindu Dharmartha Samithi on Thursday donated two umbrellas to the temple in connection with the ongoing nine-day annual Brahmotsavam.

ANANTAPUR: There was a partial response to the bandh of the CPI(Maoist) in the district on Thursday in protest against the encounter killing of Venkatesh alias Babu in Korrakodu of Kuderu mandal on September 18.
