DEHRA DUN: The agitating primary school teachers here were in for a pleasant surprise on Thursday as Chief Minister Narayan Dutt Tiwari walked up to them at Gandhi Park minutes before they were to begin their march to gherao the Vidhan Sabha and fulfilled their demands. The teachers were more than happy to withdraw their agitation and return to their jobs with renewed zeal as Mr. Tiwari announced that all the primary teachers would be treated as Government servants from the date of their appointment and the "Shiksha Mitras" would also be made full-time employees soon. The primary teachers in Uttaranchal have been on the warpath for the past three years seeking Government employee status and a comprehensive transfer policy. The Education Department has been rocked time and again by allegations that the officials clear teachers' requests for transfer only after taking hefty bribes. Mr. Tiwari wanted the teachers to make every child competent in English as well as computers. . "Forget petty politics. You are gurus and try to be worthy of the respect and love bestowed upon you by the students and the parents," he said.
