Call to set up regional development boards

Staff Reporter

KHAMMAM: The CPI district committee has urged the State Government to constitute regional development boards as a first step towards correcting regional imbalances. Addressing a news conference here on Thursday, its secretary K. Sambhasiva Rao and a host of other leaders said that the need of the hour was a package for development of Telangana districts.

Polavaram design

The CPI leaders questioned as to why the government was reluctant to modify the design of the Polavaram project.

The project would inevitably cause some dislocation but it could be minimised by lowering the project height as suggested by irrigation experts, they said.

Mr. Sambhasiva Rao said his party had been making efforts for unity of the Left parties in the district.

The delay in taking up works on the Dummugudem lift schemes was creating doubts in the minds of people, he said, adding that the party would organise a massive protest in front of the Collectorate on October 6 in support of its demands, which included, among other things, implementation of G.O. 610. Mr. Sambhasiva Rao said that the party would focus on strengthening the organisation at the grassroots level.
