Staff Reporter

NALGONDA: A gang of burglars allegedly killed a provisions shop owner before looting his house and destroying some important documentsat Sangem village in Valigonda mandal late on Wednesday night.

According to police sources, three masked men barged into the house of Vangapalli Venkataiah, 65, by lifting the backdoor with the help of rods and swooped on his bed. Before the elderly person opened his eyes, they strangled him with a saree. He reportedly died on the spot. The miscreants also tried to kill his wife, V. Andal, 52, by throttling her with a cloth. "They let me off thinking that I have lost my life but I have alerted my neighbours after they left my home," she told reporters, adding that the miscreants were in her home for twenty minutes.

The burglars looted 18 tolas of gold, 50 tolas of silver and Rs.10,000 in cash. They also took away some provisions from the storeroom.

Surprisingly, they burnt down some important documents kept in the cupboard. The documents included some promissory notes and bond papers.

Venkataiah is survived by wife, two sons and two daughters.

The Valigonda police called for the dog squad and CLUES team. "Going by the burning down of promissory notes, we suspect the role of some locals," Valigonda Sub-Inspector T. Srinivas said.
