Scholarship for tribals is a `distant' dream

Staff Reporter

Failure of R&B wing to issue distance certificates affects students

  • Students demand doing away with `distance certificate'
  • Officials have to grapple with 200 applications every day

ADILABAD: Students, especially tribals and those belonging to weaker sections, on Thursday faced a piquant situation while attempting to obtain the `distance certificate' necessary for receiving college scholarships.

The certificate indicating the distance between the native village of the student and the college where he is studying is given by the R&B department. Based on this, the amount of scholarships is fixed.

    D. Gajanand, a first year degree student at the Government degree college for boys here belonging to Kuchalapur said he applied for the certificate three days ago. So did R. Ankush and R. Parashuram of the same college.

The students demanded doing away with this procedure because of the inherent difficulties in obtaining the certificate. "The officials at the R&B department are busy with their own work. Most of the time they are unavailable," pointed out Ankush.

"The distances between any two places in the district are well known to those concerned and they do not change. So why insist for a certificate for awarding scholarships," said an official at the department.

He said every day the officials have to grapple with about 200 applications.
