CHENNAI: The Jayaprakash Narayan Forum on Thursday urged the Chennai Corporation to rename the street where veteran socialist M.S. Appa Rao resided (Dandayuthapani Nagar, Kotturpuram) after him. A resolution passed at a condolence meeting organised by the Forum also requested the Centre to issue a postal stamp in honour of Appa Rao. Appa Rao "avoided the limelight and declined any power or position in the party. He was easily accessible to party workers." In his passing away, the country had lost "another selfless, fearless freedom fighter, an ardent socialist, a humanist and another link with the Gandhian past," the resolution said. Speakers praised his simplicity, dedication to the cause of the socialist movement and the passion with which he approached a subject. Era Sezhian, former Member of Parliament, said Appa Rao was humane in his approach to any issue. He was the guiding star for many. G.A. Vadivelu, politician and vice-president of the Forum, who had known Appa Rao for about 60 years, said despite the fact that he was born in a zamindar family, he became a socialist. S.S. Narayanan, industrialist, recalled his association with Appa Rao and said in the faction-ridden Janata politics, he never took sides. "All were his friends... He had a keen sense of right and wrong." K. Satyanarayan, president, JP Forum, said Appa Rao was a tower of strength for the working class. S. Krishnamurthy, general secretary, read out the resolution.
