Attur needs proper waste management, drainage

S. Ramesh

Water shortage, polluting sago units too worrying voters

ATTUR: Elections to the Attur Municipality will focus on the under ground drainage (UGD) and the implementation of the solid waste management programme - the key demands of the residents in the town.

Residents are pressing for the execution of the UGD project for long. The untreated wastewater from the town is being let into the Vashista River, polluting the river and the environment. The UGD project is perceived as the solution to stop wastewater flow into the river.

The previous municipal council has passed a resolution in this regard. But concrete efforts have not emerged so far to implement UGD project in the town. Further, residents are demanding the municipality to take action against sago and starch manufacturing units, which are letting untreated water into the drainage.

The municipality is yet to implement the solid waste management programme in the town in total. The municipal administration is collecting waste at doorsteps in all the 33 wards. But segregation at source is being carried out in just 12 wards. And the municipality lacks adequate infrastructure to convert the bio-degradable waste into manure. The establishment of a new compost yard at Appammasamudram is yet to be completed. Residents are demanding the municipal administration to speed up the work and complete it quickly.

Dump yard

Residents are also insisting the municipality to remove the garbage from the dump yard in Ward 33, as several residential colonies are situated close to it.

The other demands of the people in the town included improvement of roads and establishment of sufficient number of public water taps and streetlights. People want the municipal administration to initiate measures to ease the traffic congestion in the Bazzar street and Salem - Cuddalore road.

The town witnesses water shortage during the summer. Residents are demanding the municipality to sort out the problems in water supply.

The town has a total of 38,368 voters (men - 18,567; women - 19,801).
