ACHR welcomes U.S. sanctions on Thai junta

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Asian Centre for Human Rights (ACHR) has welcomed the imposition of sanctions on the Thai military junta by the United States.

In a statement issued on Friday, ACHR director Suhas Chakma said that addressing the Thai military coup was crucial to address the Myanmar junta. Otherwise, all measures taken against the State Peace and Development Council, including putting of Myanmar on the agenda of the U.N. Security Council, may fall flat.

Junta crticised

The Thai junta has no intention to hand over power to civilians and it was basically seeking a credible proxy like Privy Councillor General Surayud Chulanont to run the country by transforming the Council for Democratic Reform into Council for National Security, Mr. Chakma said.

He added that the constitution must be drafted by holding elections for constituent assembly and not by selecting so-called constitution drafters.
