It's all about marriages

Madhur Tankha

NEW DELHI: Acclaimed filmmaker Sooraj Barjatya is one of the most sought after persons in tinsel town. This can be testified by the fact that Bollywood's young actress Amrita Rao cannot stop singing paeans about the talented director who gave cinemagoers momentous films like "Maine Pyar Kiya" and "Hum Aapke Hain Kaun".

In Delhi on Friday to launch the Vivaaha diamond jewellery collection of D'damas, Amrita sounded upbeat about her forthcoming film from the Barjatya's stable. Titled "Vivaaha", the film is all about the sanctity of marriage and the symbolism of exchanging engagement rings. Inspired by the film's theme the new collection has been created.

"It is a pleasure to be associated with Sooraj Barjatya who has come out with so many scintillating films. Barjatyaji occupies a special place in the hearts of film buffs. Moreover, he is an angel of a person blessed with a golden heart. Every girl aspires to act in a movie made by the sensitive filmmaker. It is with goodness and purity of heart that he has scripted my role of Poonam," said the effervescent actress.

Revealing that she is playing a North Indian girl from a small town, Amrita said: "In the film, I am playing a humble girl, who calls water `jal'. She lives in a town where no girl wears jeans. Eventually she is wooed and proposed by a Delhi-based boy played by Shahid Kapur."

Amrita, who had a whale of a time shooting in Lutyens' Delhi for the film, has "special memories" of the city. "One song has also been shot in the Capital. I relate to my character in terms of basic human emotion and commitment. Poonam is a soft-hearted girl who is as delicate as a feather." Refuting the suggestion that her character of Poonam sounds similar to her role in her debut film "Ishq Vishq", Amrita said that in "Vivaah" she was playing a more mature girl than in "Ishq Vishq", where she essayed a typical college-going student. At the launch, actor Upen Patel also came and it was announced that he would be the brand ambassador of the diamond jewellery company.
