BELGAUM: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy said on Thursday that the legislature session held here had a set a new precedent, besides opening a new chapter of development and progress in the history of north Karnataka. He was participating in a function after laying foundation stone for various development works, including a housing complex for employees of the Revenue Department and the Karnataka Housing Board at Jakkere Honda and a cricket stadium in the city. He also laid the foundation stone for a Kannada Sahitya Bhavan building at Nehru Nagar. He said the Government had released Rs. 220 crore for development works in the district. Mr. Kumaraswamy, who stayed at Shendur near Nippani in Chikkodi taluk on Wednesday night, announced Rs. 7 crore for the development of the village located on the border. He directed the officials to send a proposal to provide drinking water to the village at the earliest. He said the Government's duty was to fulfil the basic requirements of the people even if Shendur became part of Maharashtra in the event of the implementation of the Mahajan Commission report. Earlier, Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa laid the foundation stone for a Kannada Bhavan at Vadgaon in the city, said the Government had announced its decision to make Belgaum the second capital of the State. He promised that the city would be developed along with other parts of north Karnataka. Shashikant A. Naik, district in-charge Minister; Abhay Kumar Patil, MLA; Siddalingaiah, Chairman of the Kannada Development Authority; Suresh Angadi, MP; B.S. Sial, Director General of Police; and Shalini Rajneesh, Deputy Commissioner, were present.
