Indians flatter to deceive

KOLKATA: India's quiver was full of woe on the penultimate day of the fourth Meteksan World Cup archery championships in Shanghai on Friday.

The women's recurve team lost in the bronze medal play-off to Turkey on the last arrow and the men's recurve and women's compound sides were eliminated in the first round of the team championships.

The end for the women's recurve team comprising Chekrovolu Swuro, Reena Kumari and Punya Prabha came rather abruptly in the bronze medal play-off match against Turkey.

The trio was always in the lead and looked on course to pick up the first World Cup medal when disaster struck. India's final arrow was suspended because it was shot after the stipulated time and at that time the score stood 213-210 in favour of Turkey.

The men's recurve team bowed out after losing to Belarus in the tie-break after the two teams were tied at 210. In the shootout, Belarus won 27-24. The women's compound team stumbled at the first hurdle itself, losing to the Philippines 216-217. — Special Correspondent
