Mithun dazzles with century

KOTTAYAM: A scintillating century by M. Mithun (158) put Alappuzha in a comfortable position against Pathanamthitta on the opening day of their South Zone under-15 inter-district cricket tournament at the St. Ephrem's HS ground on Friday.

Mithun's was the major contribution in Alappuzha's first innings total of 285. Jortin Danny (three for 28) and Ajith Murali (three for 24) bowled well for Pathanamthitta, which was in a spot of bother losing three wickets for 62 runs at close.

At the Medical College ground, Thiruvananthapuram hit back after an insipid show with the bat against Kottayam.

After being bundled out for 112, Thiruvananthapuram clawed its way back through off-spinner R. Jithin (six for 41) as Kottayam was dismissed for 131. In its second innings, Thiruvananthapuram was 35 for no loss.

The scores:

Alappuzha 285 in 69.5 overs (M. Mithun 158, B. Kiran 34, Ajith Murali three for 24, Jortin Danny three for 28) v Pathanamthitta 62 for three in 25 overs (Ajith Murali 29).

Thiruvananthapuram 112 in 28 overs (R. Nithin 59, Tony Jose four for 28, Bijo Philip three for 25) & 35 for no loss in 13 overs v Kottayam 131 in 46.2 overs (Bijo Philip 26 n.o., Jithin six for 41, Varun three for 25).

Pankajakasturi advances

At Thiruvananthapuram, Pankajakasturi crushed Masters CC by 85 runs and entered the quarterfinals of the G.V. Raja memorial all-Kerala cricket tournament at the Medical College ground here on Friday.

Bijumon was the hero of Pankajakasturi's win. He first chipped in with 28 as his team set a challenging target of 189.

Bijumon (four for 30) and Kannan (three for six) wrecked the Masters innings and it was bundled out for 103.

The scores: Pankajakasturi 188 in 28 overs (Bijumon 28, Arun 26, Shaju Mathan 26, Suraj four for 24) bt Masters CC 103 in 18 overs (R. Anish 33, Philip 29, Bijumon four for 30, Kannan three for six).
