Dusthagir Ibrahim continues to be in lead

Tuticorin: Dusthagir Ibrahim of Madurai, continues to lead with 8.5 points at the end of the ninth round in the 19th annual SPIC Trophy FIDE-rated open chess tournament at Tuticorin on Friday.

Ibrahim toppled top seed D.P. Singh of Jharkhand, in the eighth round and then beat Syed Anwar Sazhuli of ICF in the ninth round to maintain his unbeaten record.

Second seed International Master R.R. Laxman is on 7.5 points.

Lady Doak triumphs

At Madurai, Lady Doak College, Madurai lifted the Abdul Rehman Trophy defeating Sri Meenakshi Government College for Women, Madurai 25-16, 25-15, 25-17 in the final of the Madurai Kamaraj University inter-collegiate women's volleyball tournament at the University indoor stadium on Friday.

The results: Semifinals: Sri Meenakshi Govt. bt SFR, Sivakasi 25-12, 25-10, 25-6; LDC bt EMG Yadava, Madurai 25-16, 25-23, 25-9.

Quarterfinals: Sri Meenakshi bt PKN Arts, Thirumangulam 25-2, 25-1; LDC bt VVV, Virudhunagar 25-10, 25-9; EMG Yadava bt Fatima, Madurai 25-19, 25-17; SFR bt SRNM, Sattur 25-11, 25-8.

SRM in final

At Virudhunagar, Annamalai University and SRM College IST, Kattankulathur entered the final of the Dr. Lysander Memorial Trophy State-level inter-collegiate basketball tournament organised by Y's Men's club defeating Sourashtra College, Madurai 73-42 and Gandhigram Rural Institute 74-53 respectively at S.P. Kothala Nadar Stadium, Virudhunagar on Friday.

Earlier, MSP Solai Nadar Memorial HSS, Dindigul and American College HSS, Madurai entered the inter-school final with victories over the defending champion St. Britto's, Madurai 34-20 and Idayam Rajendran Residential School, Madurai 61-36 respectively.

The results: Colleges (semifinals): Annamalai 73 (Pechi 24) bt Sourashtra 42 (Anand 19); SRM, IST 74 (Jeyaprakash 16) bt GRI 53 (Jeyachandran 21, Chandrakumar 21).

SAEC bags title

At Srivilliputhur, Dr. Sivanthi Adithanar Engineering College, Tiruchendur won the team title in the Anna university Zone-10 inter-engineering tennis tournament defeating Mepco Schlenk Engineering College, Sivakasi 3-0 in the final at Arulmigu Kalasalingam Engineering College ground, near Srivilliputhur on Friday.

The results (final): Dr. Sivanthi Adithanar bt Mepco Schlenk 3-0 (Guganesh bt Prasanth Paul 6-1, 6-0; Abilash bt Varunkumar 6-1, 4-6, 6-4; Guganesh/Abilash bt Prasanth Paul/ Varunkumar 6-4, 6-2.

Third place: Kamaraj College of Engg., Virudhunagar bt A.K.C.E., Krishnan Kovil 3-1.

Sona downs Erode

At Tirunelveli, Sona Engineering College, Salem beat Erode Sengunthar College of Engineering Perundurai 25-11, 25-12 in the inaugural match of the Anna University inter-zone (champion colleges) women's volleyball tournament at Government College of Engineering on Thursday night.

In another match St. Joseph's College of Engineering, Chennai beat Kamaraj Engineering College, Virudhunagar 25-5, 25-8.

In the inter-zone combined team tournament Zone-9 beat Zone-2 25-17, 25-17 and Zone-10 beat Zone-4 25-12, 25-20.

IB, ICF score wins

At Karaikudi, Indian Bank and Integral Coach Factory recorded their second successive wins, while Indian Overseas Bank registered its first win in the State-level invitation prize money volleyball tournament organised be Karai Boyz Volleyball Club, Karaikudi on Thursday night.

The results: ICF bt Tamil Nadu Special Police 16-25, 25-14, 25-18, 25-21; Indian Bank bt Sports Hostel of Excellence 25-21, 27-25, 25-21; Indian Overseas Bank bt Tamil Nadu Special Police 25-21, 25-18, 23-25, 25-16.

MSS Wakf advances

At Sivakasi, Defending champion, M.S.S. Wakf board College, Madurai entered the semifinals of the Madurai Kamaraj University A Zone inter-collegiate football tournament defeating American College, Madurai 3-0 at Ayya Nadar Janakiammal College ground, Sivakasi on Friday.

Easy for GTN

At Dindigul, Four goals in a row by Paramasivam helped host GTN Arts College, Dindigul post an emphatic 4-0 win over Ram Prabha College, Dindigul and enter the semifinals of the Madurai Kamaraj University `B' zone inter-collegiate football tournament at Dindigul on Friday.

PSG CAS takes honours

At Coimbatore, PSG College of Arts and Science with three wins from as many matches topped the league table to take the top honours in the Bharathiar University inter-collegiate basketball championship for men on Friday.

PSG defeated favourite Dr. GRD College of Science 80-53 in its final league clash for the title.

The results (league): Dr. GRD 66 bt Saraswathi Thiyagaraja (Pollachi) 28; PSG CAS 71 bt Sri Krishna CAS 30; Sri Krishna 44 bt Saraswathi 13; PSG CAS 80 bt Dr. GRD 53.
