NEW DELHI: Mizo Higher Secondary School, Aizwal, defeated Government Inter College, Gopeshwar, Uttaranchal, 3-0 and made it to the quarterfinals from group I in the Subroto Cup sub-junior (under-14) football tournament at the Ambedkar Stadium here on Friday. Lalngalhawma scored a brace, striking in the 22nd and 62nd minutes, and Lalnunthuanga (42nd) completed the tally for the Mizo school. Also making it to the quarterfinals was Government Higher Secondary School (Dimapur). Lalpu Thomsong scored in the 60th and 62nd minutes for the Nagaland school in a 2-2 draw against SAI Eastern Centre, Kolkata. For the Kolkata team, Mrinmoy Samanta (30th) and Ajoy Roy (40th) scored. In another league match, St. Ignatius High School, Gulma, Jharkhand, defeated Army Boys 1-0 through Binod's 52nd minute strike. In the junior section (under-17), Khalid and Tameen scored four goals apiece as Habibya School, Afghanistan, defeated Burn Hall Higher Secondary School, Srinagar, 13-1 in the group VII league match. Tameen, who opened the scoring, went on to complete a hat-trick as the Afghanistan school dominated the proceedings throughout the match. Abdul Maheen, M. Saleem, Shir Ahmed, Najaf and Nasir were the other scorers. For the Srinagar school, Omair Ashraf scored the goal in the 52nd minute. In other league match, Zahira College (Colombo) defeated Government Boys Anand Higher Secondary School (Dhar) 2-0 through M.N.M. Fazal's strikes in the 28th and 33rd minutes.
