KOLLAM: The Union Government has declared Kollam as the `Centre for Export Excellence-Cashew.' The notification in this connection was released by Director-General of Foreign Trade K.T. Chacko on September 28. Kollam MP P. Rajendran announced this in a statement here on Friday. Mr. Rajendran said he had submitted a memorandum in this connection to Union Minister for Commerce Kamal Nath earlier. The criterion for declaring a city or town as the Centre for Export Excellence is that any particular commodity exported from that place should fetch a minimum foreign exchange earning equivalent to Rs. 1,000 crores a anum. Kollam had exceeded the target in cashew exports long ago. Alappuzha had been accorded the same status some time back. Mr. Rajendran said the status is being accorded under the new foreign trade policy of the Union Government. Places accorded with the status will become eligible for Centrally sponsored schemes and funds for further promotion of exports.
