BANGALORE: The Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry has permitted the State Government to start the Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences from this academic year. The Ministry has sanctioned an intake of 100 seats and the admission will start on Saturday. This is the third college to be approved by the Centre out of the six that the State Government had applied for last year. Two others are in Mandya and Belgaum where admissions have been conducted. Buildings are under construction in Shimoga, Raichur and Bidar. Announcing the Centre's permission at a press conference here on Friday, Public Works and Power Minister H.D. Revanna, who is also the district-in-charge Minister for Hassan and director of Medical Education Ramananda Shetty said the admission had to be completed by midnight of Saturday, the deadline set for completing the process of admission to medical seats. The Supreme Court on a petition by some students from the State praying for directing the Centre to permit the Hassan college had asked the latter to consider it. The Minister said infrastructure was in place and appointment of teaching and non-teaching staff and laboratories had been completed for first and second year students. Some lecturers have been given higher salary for attracting talent. Mr. Revanna thanked the Union Government, Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and the Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa for the cooperation extended to start the college at Hassan from this year. The communication said that there would be a steady increase in attendance. It said that the permission was for one year and would be renewed on an yearly basis .
