HYDERABAD: The launch of a housing scheme under Jawaharal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) programme at Afzal Sagar in Asifnagar constituency was stalled on Friday by a group of fishermen claiming rights on the identified land. Minister for Information and Public Relations, Mohd. Ali Shabbir had to go back without laying foundation stone. Later, former Asifnagar MLA D. Nagender announced that the inauguration was only postponed and the scheme would be launched once the doubts of the fishermen were cleared.
Five acres identified
Hyderabad Collector, Chandravadan said that the administration identified five acres of land under survey numbers 52, 53 and 54 in Nampally village for the purpose. Only one acre was vacant and the remaining area was already occupied with houses. The idea was to construct 234 houses in that land with all basic amenities under the JNNURM with each unit costing Rs. 1 lakh. However, the local fishermen community opposed the inauguration, arguing that it was their burial ground and even records proved it. The administration's argument was that even the remaining four acres land was part of the burial ground and the constructions were illegal.
