Dance and music festival begins today

PALAKKAD: A 11-day annual dance and music festival, organised by Swaralaya will begin at the Fort Maidan here on Sunday. Cine actor Dilip and Kalamandalam Ramankutty Nair will inaugurate the festival. Lyricist Sreekumaran Thampi and music director M.K. Arjunan will address the gathering.

The inaugural function will be followed by a `ganamela' in honour of M.K. Arjunan. G. Venugopal, Sudeep Kumar, Kallara Gopan, Ranjini Jose, Mridula, Prathibha and Vrinda Menon will render the songs.

A Carnatic vocal concert by Vijayalakshmi Subramanian and party will be held on Monday. Vijayalakshmi is a recipient of the Sangeet Alankar from Gandharva Mahavidyalaya and the Sangeet Siromani from Delhi University.

The concert will be followed by an Odissi recital by Sharmila Mukherjee. Sharmila trained under the doyen of Odissi dance, Guru Kelucharan Mahapatra, in Cuttack. She is currently teaching dance and movement therapy at the Sheila Kothawala Institute for the Deaf, and Odissi at her own institution in Bangalore.

Kadri Gopalnath (saxophone) and actress Rajshree Warrier (Bharatanatyam) will perform on October 3. There will be a Carnatic vocal concert by Abhishek Raghuram and Odissi by Meeradas on October 4.

K. Omanakutty will render a Carnatic vocal concert on October 5 followed by Bharatanatyam by actor Shobana. On October 6, Trisakthi Fusion group will be in concert followed by Sufi Kathak and Qawali by Swathi Sinha. On October 7, T.K. Krishna will conduct a carnatic vocal concert followed by Bharatanatyam by actor Kavya Madhavan. Padma Subramaniam and film actor Vineeth will give a Bharatanatyam recital on October 8, followed by a `ganamela' by Vidyadharan, music director Madhu Balakrishnan and others to pay homage to Ravindran.

On October 9, there will be a `jugalbandhi' is by Ramesh Narayanan (Hindustani vocal) amd Ananthapadmanabhan (Carnatic veena) followed by Kuchipudi by Sonia B. Nair. On October 10, the violin duet is by G.J.R. Krishnan and G.J.R. Vijayalakshmi followed by Kama Dhana Saptam. Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan will inaugurate the valedictory function.
