Housing plan hit by staff shortage

Staff Reporter

As against 213 work inspectors required, only 59 are on the roll

  • Out of 91,565 houses sanctioned, only 4,724 have been completed
  • Apart from 29 trainees, 129 more were being employed on contract
  • 9,000 fresh applications have been received under the housing scheme

ANANTAPUR: Shortage of field staff in the Housing Department, particularly work inspectors, is hampering the progress of construction of houses under Indiramma scheme in the district. Of the 213 work inspectors required for the housing scheme only 59 are on the rolls in the district.

When contacted about the progress of Indiramma houses, District Manager of Andhra Pradesh Housing Corporation N. Ramachandra Reddy stated that of the 91,565 houses sanctioned under the scheme 66,171 were grounded so far and 4,724 were completed.

Shortage of cement hit the progress of the scheme in the beginning and now it appears to be shortage of staff. As per GO 239 three work inspectors are required in each mandal to supervise the housing schemes. Similarly, three each are required in municipalities and six in municipal corporations.

Accordingly, 213 work inspectors are required in the district. But, only 59 work inspectors are available in the department now. Another 25 apprentice trainees were also helping the department and 129 persons are being employed on contract basis at a monthly salary of Rs. 4,500.

For the benefit of poor families who did not enrol for the scheme due to migration or visits to other areas are being given another opportunity to apply for shelter under Indiramma scheme. Accordingly, 9,000 applications were received in the district and they were being verified.
