Co-op bank meet ends in row

Special Correspondent

The meet, convened as per court ruling, was declared closed for want of quorum

NO LISTENERS: There were many empty chairs at the Tirupati Co-op Town Bank's general body meet on Saturday.

TIRUPATI: Crisis continues to stalk the Tirupati Co-Op Town Bank as its general body meeting convened here on Saturday at the instance of the High Court ended on a controversial note. The Tirupati Town Bank Parirakshana Committee, headed by P. Prabhakar Reddy, which is spearheading a movement for the conduct of election on democratic lines to the bank's board, condemned the `contentious decision' of the Person in-Charge to end the meeting abruptly allegedly for want of quorum -- one-tenth of the bank's reported one lakh and odd total strength.

The agitating leaders said that the very fact that the official arranged for hardly 250 chairs at the venue, indicated that the intention was to scuttle the meeting and thereby the elections to the bank's board.

Stop-gap body

Election to the board is caught in a web of court litigations and a row between rival groups of the ruling party.

While one group succeeded in getting an order issued by the Government constituting a stop-gap body to the bank's board till the election is held, the other succeeded in getting a `status quo' court order.

But even before the court order could be served, the stop-gap body managed to complete the swearing-in ceremony and declare that the status quo order would not apply to it.

Though the court has again issued orders on the status quo issue, the stop-gap body maintains that the court has only directed the Person in-Charge to hold the general body on September 30 to finalise the date for the election and has not said anything on its validity.
