A cultural centre for every district, says Sheila

She dedicates the new centre at Janakpuri People urged to make the maximum use of cultural centres

NEW DELHI: Dedicating the newly opened Janakpuri District Cultural Centre to local residents on Saturday, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit announced that every district in the Capital would have its own cultural centre in the next few years.

Ms. Dikshit said the new Centre would help in disseminating the message of unity in diversity as people from all communities and States had settled in Janakpuri. "This would also provide opportunity to different organisations to stage their programmes apart from enriching cultural talent," she said. The Chief Minister also urged the people to make the maximum use of the cultural centre and also ensure its maintenance.

Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely expressed confidence that Delhi would soon "become the cultural hub and best cultural Capital" in the world before the Commonwealth Games 2010.

The Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, Jagdish Mukhi, said the District Cultural Centre had been a long cherished dream of the residents of Janakpuri that has now come to fruition.

Joint venture

The Centre is a joint venture of Sahitya Kala Parishad and the Delhi Public Library. Built at a cost of Rs.2 crore, the building will be shared by both the organisations.

There are two auditoria, one on the first floor and the other on the second. Sahitya Kala Parishad will use these for staging cultural programmes and holding workshops, interaction sessions and performing art competitions. Apart from decentralising cultural activities in the Capital, the Centre will also be used to train and provide platform to the young upcoming artistes of the area.
