JIPMER employees resume work

PUDUCHERRY: Health services at Jawaharlal Institute of Post-Graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) resumed after 22 days as the employees called off their strike following the direction from Madras High Court to the hospital administration to take back suspended employees.

The JIPMER Staff Struggle Committee leader Arochim Kalaimathi said all the employees who were on strike joined duty.

As per the court direction, the employees gave a written undertaking that they would not resort to any direct action or indulge in any violence. The employees had been on strike from September 8 to press the Centre to revoke its decision to grant autonomy to the institution. — Staff Reporter

Seven killed in van-lorry collision

NAMAKKAL: Seven persons including the driver died when the van in which they were travelling collided head on with a lorry near Paramathi Velur on Saturday morning.

Police said the accident occurred when a group of people from Nanchai Idayaru near Paramathi Velur, after worshipping at a temple in Kancheepuram, was returning in the van to their village.

Ramasamy (50), Balasubramanian (35), Vadivel (30), Subramani (53), Muthusamy (60), Paspathy (40) and van driver Matheshwaran (35) died on the spot while three others were rushed to a private hospital in Namakkal with serious injuries. Balasubramanian filed his nomination papers for the ward election in his village. — Special Correspondent

Widespread rain in delta districts

THANJAVUR: Several parts of Cauvery delta districts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam experienced widespread rain in the last two days.

The rain is beneficial to standing kuruvai and samba paddy crops and also for transplantation of the samba and thaladi paddy crops in these districts. However, heavy rain on Friday night affected harvest of the kuruvai paddy crop in Kumbakonam, Tiruvidaimarudur, Orathanadu and Mayiladuturai region in Nagapattinam district.

Tirukattupalli in Thanjavur district recorded the maximum rainfall of 55 mm on Friday night.

Thanjavur, Orathanadu, Tiruvaiyaru, Papanasam, Mayiladuturai, Sirkazhi and Nannilam recorded 30 mm of rainfall. — Staff Reporter

Special trains

CHENNAI: The Southern Railway will run the following special trains to clear the extra rush of passengers.

Train No: 0610 Tiruchi-Chennai Egmore special will leave Tiruchi at 9.45 p.m. on October 2 and arrive at Chennai Egmore at 4.45 a.m. the next day. In the return direction Train No: 0609 will leave Egmore at 11 p.m. on October 3 and reach Tiruchi at 6 a.m. the next day.

The trains will stop at Srirangam, Ariyalur, Vriddhachalam, Villupuram, Chengalpattu and Tambaram, Train No. 0610 will stop at Mambalam also.

Special train to Coimbatore: Train No: 0623 will leave Central at 10.20 p.m. on October 2 and reach Coimbatore at 7.15 a.m. the next day. The train will stop at Arakkonam, Katpadi, Jolarpettai, Salem, Erode and Tiruppur.

Bangalore-Chennai weekend specials: Train No: 0684 will leave Bangalore at 9.30 p.m. on Fridays from 6.10.2006 to 24.11.2006 and arrive at Chennai Central at 3.55 a.m. the next day.

Train No: 0683 will leave Chennai Central at 11.30 p.m. on Saturdays from 7.10.2006 to 25.11.2006 and arrive at Bangalore at 5.55 a.m. the next day. — Special Correspondent

Holiday for liquor shops

KARUR: All the Indian Made Foreign liquor shops in the district would remained closed on October 2 in view of Gandhi Jayanthi. Anyone found violating the order would be dealt with severely under relevant laws, says a press release issued here by the Collector T. N. Venkatesh.

Held under Goondas Act

TIRUCHI: A 32-year-old man who was involved in illegal drug trafficking was detained under the Goondas Act on Friday on the orders of the Commissioner of Police, Sunil Kumar Singh.

Transport Minister inspects depot

TIRUCHI: The Transport Minister K. N. Nehru inspected the Dheeran Nagar depot of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (Kumbakonam), Tiruchi, region here on Friday. He inspected construction work inside the depot and held discussions with the Transport Department officials.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level at the Mettur dam stood at 100.85 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Saturday. The inflow was 11,481 cusecs and the outflow 8,176 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

4,150 kg of PDS rice seized during raids

Tuticorin: The officials from Revenue and Supplies departments seized 4,150 kg of rice meant for Public Distribution System, in combined raids this week. The team, led by P Anbarasu, District Revenue Officer, and S Vishakan, District Supply Officer, during a check on Ettayapuram Road seized 1,650 kg of rice while it was being smuggled in a van.Official sources said the van was seized and the driver was handed over to the police. The remaining quantity of rice kept in 50 sacks found abandoned in an open ground near Tharuvaikulam was also seized. The Collector, R Palaniyandi, had ordered an enquiry into the incident.

Garden damaged

Tuticorin: The Srivaikundam police are on the look for unidentified persons who had allegedly damaged a garden at Pudukudi near here recently.

Based on a complaint lodged by Guruswamy (33), owner of the garden, that some miscreants had entered his garden and damaged plantains worth Rs 9,000, police are conducting investigations to find out the culprits. — Staff Reporter

IMFL shops, bars to remain closed on Oct. 2

ERODE: All IMFL shops and bars should be closed on October 2, in view of Gandhi Jayanthi, said Collector D. Karthikeyan. In a press release on Saturday, the Collector said criminal cases would be registered against those who went against the instruction.

ERODE: Erode municipal officials on Saturday removed hoardings and banners outlining achievements of political parties, put up at many places, including Paneerselvam Park Junction, Erode Government Headquarters Hospital Junction and areas in and around the bus stand.

Nominations withdrawn

ERODE: Over 50 fifty persons withdrew their nominations for local body elections, on Saturday - the last date for withdrawal of candidature. Congress, AIADMK and DMK rebel candidates who filed their nominations as Independents refused to withdraw their nominations, despite requests from official candidates.

Symbols were allotted to the contesting candidates.

ERODE: Erode and its surrounding areas experienced heavy rain on Friday night. Bhavani recorded 44.4 mm of rainfall; Erode - 33 mm; Gobichettipalayam - 12 mm; Sathyamangalam - 5 mm and Bhavanisagar - 4.4 mm.
