Jammu: Bharatiya Janata Party national spokesman Parkash Javadekar has said the terrorists responsible for attacking democratic institutions in the country deserve capital punishment.

No leniency

Taking exception to the reported statement of Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad that Afzal Guru's death sentence be commuted to life imprisonment, he said that though the details of the statement were not available his party was of the opinion that there should be no leniency when dealing with acts of terrorism.

Meanwhile, some human rights and civil society groups have supported the demand for Presidential clemency to Afzal Guru.

The Jammu and Kashmir People's Union for Civil Liberties said it was principally against capital punishment and therefore Afzal should not be hanged.

Consensus against hanging

Ashima Koul, Convener of Athwas, an organisation working for cementing relations between various communities of the State has said: "The issue should not be seen from narrow political ends but from a larger perspective. The fact remains that the world over there is a general consensus against hanging."
