CHENNAI: Governor Surjit Singh Barnala on Friday said school students should be motivated to take up civil services, which had a big rolein strengthening the nation's unity and integrity by solving local problems. Inaugurating a coaching programme of the Periyar IAS and IPS Coaching Centre, he said, "Many of our problems require long-term thinking. Development is a continuous process. Our Constitution endows the civil service with a degree of permanence. It is this service that takes our republic in the desired direction as laid out in the directive principles of state policy," he said. Coaching candidates for the civil services assumed importance as only the most outstanding performers got selected, he said. Coaching centres should come up in large numbers in the State. Describing Dravida Kazhagam (DK) founder Periyar E.V. Ramasamy as a relentless fighter against social injustice, Mr. Barnala said the IAS and IPS centre named after him strove to help aspirants from the oppressed and downtrodden sections. "We have a large number of people who are underprivileged and who have been discriminated against for centuries. When the Constitution of India was drawn up, the founding fathers of our republic took it upon themselves to make up for those centuries of inequity by giving the underprivileged a privileged position with regard to admission to civil services," he said. Secretary of the Periyar Self-respect Propaganda Institution and DK president K. Veeramani referred to the role of the coaching centre in training candidates. Presenting the performance report, coaching centre director E. Venkatachalam said the institute had trained more than 1,800 candidates. A total of 260 candidates cleared the preliminary examination. A significant number of them were successful in the finals.
