Kin of weavers gets relief package

Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR: As part of the relief and rehabilitation package to the families of weavers who have committed suicide out of distress caused by debt burden, the State Government is offering a package of Rs. 1.5 lakhs each to families of those who have committed suicide from April 1, 1997.

Initially, it was decided to cover the families who lost their earning members from May 14, 2004. But, due to pressure from the party leaders in the districts, the State Government had revised the date of implementation of the package to include families of weavers who had ended their lives between April 1, 1997 and May 13, 2004 too.

Accordingly, 119 weavers' families have been provided relief by the Government so far by giving an assistance of Rs. 1 lakh for livelihood and another Rs. 50,000 for settlement of debt proportionately, if there is more than one lender.
