Grand procession at Tirumala

TIRUMALA: Over one lakh devotees participated in the procession of the golden chariot organised on Saturday as part of the nine-day annual Brahmotsavams of Lord Venkateswara at Tirumala. Idols of Lord Malayappa Swamy flanked by his two divine consorts Sri Devi and Bhoo Devi were mounted atop the chariot, which was dragged through the Mada streets. - Staff Reporter

Record income

Tirumala: The Tirumala temple has set a new record by netting over Rs. 5.63 crores income during the first phase of the ongoing nine-day annual Brahmotsavams. According statistics this is Rs.1.33 crores more than the previous year's income. - Staff Reporter

Special trains

HYDERABAD: South Central Railway will run special trains from Kakinada town to Secunderabad and back on October 2 and 3 to clear the festival rush. The train from Kakinada will leave on October 2 at 7.30 p.m. and reach Secunderabad on 7.45 a.m. the next morning. In the return direction, the train will leave Secunderabad at 10 a.m. on October 3 and arrive at Kakinada at 8.30 p.m. on the same day. - Staff Reporter

Contractors on schedule, says YSR

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has scotched criticism that contractors are lagging behind the schedules given by the Government to execute irrigation and projects and that only 25 per cent of the work is complete in each project so far. At a press conference on Saturday, he said milestones had been fixed and "everything is going on as per these schedules except in cases where there was delay in land acquisitions and preparing of designs." - Special Correspondent

Projects for big cities

HYDERABAD: Road, drinking water supply and drainage projects worth Rs. 1,300 crores have been sanctioned to Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. This is the highest amount sanctioned to any State under the Mission. - Special Correspondent

Exams in December

HYDERABAD: Madurai Kamaraj University Study Centre, Nampally Station Road, in a statement on Saturday said UG, PG, Certificate and Diploma examinations would begin on December 20, 26 and 23 respectively. 8 killed in road accidents

Khammam: Three persons of a family died in a road accident on Khammam-Devarpali highway near Penuballi on Saturday. The police said the car they were travelling in collided with a truck. In another accident in Kakinada five persons including a two-year-old boy were killed when the auto in which they were travelling was hit by a quarry lorry, near Ravulapalem Government Degree College on the National Highway on Friday. - Staff Reporter

Move to close

schools opposed

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Democratic Teachers' Federation has resolved to oppose the move to close thousands of Government schools because of inadequate student strength. M. Gangadhar, general secretary, in a statement on Saturday blamed the mushrooming growth of private schools permitted by the administration for the falling strength. - Special Correspondent

Killed in accident

KURNOOL: A woman, identified as Laxmi Devi, was knocked down by a tractor at Maddur Nagar in the city on Saturday. She was crossing the road when the accident occurred. — Staff Reporter

Man killed for property

ANANTAPUR: A man was allegedly killed by his son here for rights over his property. According to the police, Ramanjaneyulu (51), a gangman in SCR, from Bethapalli in Gooty mandal was being pestered by his son, Kullayappa, for property. On Saturday, when the gangman was inspecting railway tracks near Basinepalli, Kullayappa and five others allegedly hacked him to death. — Staff Reporter

Tungabhadra Board

ANANTAPUR: A meeting of the Tungabhadra Board will be held at Hospet on October 6 to discuss water release to Andhra Pradesh from Tungabhadra Reservoir. Issues like joint surveillance of the canal in Karnataka territory with CISF personnel to prevent water tapping are likely to figure in the meet. — Staff Reporter

Mayor distributes school uniforms

KADAPA: Kadapa Mayor P. Ravindranath Reddy distributed school uniforms to 50 poor Muslim students of Municipal Urdu Girls High School here on Saturday.

TIRUPATI: Centre for Bioinformatics and Applied Genomics (CBAG), Mahidol University, Thailand has invited D.M.
