Staff Reporter

SIM card cost for prepaid cell phones, other charges cut

HYDERABAD: As Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) enters into its seventh year on Sunday, it announced reduction in landline rentals and a cut in other charges like the cost of SIM card for prepaid cellular connections on Saturday.

At a press conference on the occasion of its completing six years, Chief General Manager, AP Telecom Circle, R.K. Arnold said the rentals had been reduced from Rs. 99 and Rs. 160 to Rs. 75 and Rs. 120 respectively a month. Paying advance rentals will entail a discount of two months' rent for the consumer, he said.

These apart, he announced new schemes for Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada with rentals of Rs. 399, Rs. 599 and Rs. 899 a month. Apart from reducing calling rate according to the plan chosen, all three plans allow for unlimited free calls to BSNL fixed and WLL (wireless in local loop) numbers in the SDCA concerned (short distance charging area).

For example, the Hyderabad SDCA would cover the entire twin cities and adjoining Ranga Reddy district and, simply put, a customer opting for these plans can call any eight digit number in the said places absolutely free, said Principal General Manager, Hyderabad Telecom district, P.S.R. Krishna.

Internet access

For tech-savvy netizens, there's good news. The BSNL will provide high-speed internet access at public places like airports, hotels, convention centres and shopping malls. To start with, 21 locations in Hyderabad and three locations in Visakhapatnam had been selected, Mr. Arnold said. Further details could be accessed either at the BSNL website or the call centre on 1500, he said.
