Government awaiting report of the official committee: Rangasamy

Puducherry: Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy has said the Government was awaiting report of the official committee, constituted to work out modalities for distribution of monthly assistance to the educated unemployed youth in the Union Territory.

At a function at Villianoor nere here on Saturday, he said as soon as the report became available, the Government would start distributing assistance. The function was organised by the Puducherry Agricultural Workers Union.

Under the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Housing scheme, a subsidy of Rs. 1 lakh was being paid to each of the poor family to construct concrete houses and 22,000 families benefited so far.

The Cooperative Spinning Mills (SPINCO) was sanctioned Rs. 14 crore as grant for its expansion and development. Colour television sets for the poor would be distributed free soon.

The Chief Minister claimed that the Union Territory recorded an impressive economic growth and the per capita income which now stood at Rs. 62,000, was likely to go up to Rs. l lakh a year shortly.

Mr. Rangasamy appealed to the women self-help groups to utilise various welfare schemes launched here. He said the Administration would follow AICC leader Sonia Gandhi's instruction during the recent neonatal conclave of Congress Chief Ministers that farm labourers should be taken care of adequately whenever there was development of infrastructure.

Communist Party of India leader R. Nallakannu appreciated the welfare-oriented schemes adopted by the Government.

CPI MLA R. Viswanathan, CPI Puducherry State Committee secretary N. Kalainathan and chairman of the Villianoor Commune panchayat K. Natarajan (DMK) spoke.
