`CPI(M) trying to shield accused activists'

Staff Reporter

Chennithala says CPI(M) retracted from its stand on Marad probe

Kozhikode : Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Ramesh Chennithala has demanded that the Communist Party of India (Marxist) come out with a statement why that party retracted from its earlier stand opposing a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the Marad massacre on May 2, 2003.

Addressing a news conference here on Saturday, Mr. Chennithala said the CPI(M) had opposed the demand for a CBI probe when it was in the Opposition. But now it ordered a CBI probe based on the recommendations of the Marad Judicial Inquiry Commission Report. This change in attitude could be to bail out the party activists accused in the case, he alleged.

However, he maintained that the Congress party welcomed the CBI probe. The United Democratic Front (UDF) Government did not order a CBI probe following the legal opinion it received from the Advocate General during its regime, Mr. Chennithala said.

The KPCC president said the attempts made by the CPI(M) to pinpoint the former Chief Minister A.K. Antony on the basis of the report would not succeed. Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan's statement smacked of trying the tarnish the image of Mr. Antony, he said.
