Kozhikode
Staff Reporter
Kozhikode : Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has said that a satellite control room with Global Positioning System (GPS) facility will be installed at the office of the Kozhikode City Police Commissioner. He announced the new facility while inaugurating a new police station at Koilandy on Saturday. The GPS Vehicle Tracking System was launched at the Police Control Room in Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi recently. The new system would do away with the existing wireless communication using conventional methods. The GPS would help police track patrol vehicles with the help of satellites. The vehicles are tracked using a combination of global positioning satellites and Global System for Mobile communication (GSM). The relative position of the vehicle is projected on a digital map installed at the control room. The system allows the control room to find out the direction and speed of vehicles. The Home Minister said all police stations in the State would be computerised as part of modernisation programme. All the police stations would also have barracks having at least 400 square feet for personnel to relax during recess period.
Fresh package
Mr. Balakrishnan, who also holds the Tourism portfolio, said a fresh package would be envisaged for Kappad to attract domestic and foreign tourists. Kappad tourist centre comes under the limits of the Koilandy police station. The newly constructed buildings for Koilandy police station near the mini civil station also houses the police quarters. The buildings have improved infrastructure facilities for the police personnel. A high-tech facility has also been installed at the lock ups of the station. The lock ups are fitted with micro camera connected to a monitor at the reception counter. "It is for the first type a police station in the State is having such a facility," said Circle Inspector C.D. Sreenivasan, who initiated the project.
Helpful for sentries
He said the sentries would be able to view the movement of the lock up inmates, especially during night hours, when there would be a few officers at the station. The facility was installed with the approval of senior officials, said Mr. Sreenivasan. Koilandy MLA P. Viswan presided over the inaugural function. P. Sathidevi, MP, North Zone Inspector General of Police M.N. Krishnamurthy, Kannur Range Deputy Inspector General of Police S. Ananthakrishnan and Koilandy Municipal chairman K. Dasan participated in the programme.
