Bangalore: J.H. Kulkarni, Director of Instruction, College of Agriculture, University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Dharwad, has been appointed Vice-Chancellor of the UAS, Dharwad, for three years from the date he assumes office. — Staff Reporter

Upa Lokayukta seeks report

BANGALORE: Upa Lokayukta G. Patri Basavana Goud has asked S. Parameshwarappa, former Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, to submit a report of the Turahalli land issue.

Mr. Goud told The Hindu on Saturday that Mr. Parameshwarappa's report would be in addition to the report of the Principal Secretary, Revenue Department, S.M. Jamdar.

Mr. Goud on Friday took suo motu notice of the reports of fabrication of records with regard to a part of the 597-acre Turahalli minor forest. Mr. Goud said he would take action against officials, if any, named in the two reports.

Prabhakar Kore elected director

Belgaum: KLE Society chairman and Congress leader, Prabhakar B. Kore, MLC, has been elected director of the National Sugar Federation, New Delhi, for a third consecutive term. The term of office is three years, according to a press release here on Saturday. — Staff Correspondent

Former Minister criticises Congress

BANGALORE: Senior Congress leader and former Minister Harnahalli Ramaswamy on Saturday criticised the Congress for not singing `Vande Mataram' at its meetings. Participating in a seminar here, Mr. Ramaswamy said the song was an integral part of Congress culture during the days of Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru.

The party, under the present president, Sonia Gandhi, had given up singing "Vande Mataram" even at major conventions such as the one she addressed at the Palace Grounds here recently. Ms. Gandhi did not even participate in the function to commemorate the song held in New Delhi on September 7, Mr. Ramaswamy said. — Staff Reporter

Vishala Eshwar to head parishad wing

Bangalore: Subodh Kant Sahai, president of the All-India Panchayat Parishad and Union Minister for Food Processing Industries, has nominated Vishala Eshwar of Bangalore as president of the Mahila Wing of the parishad. — Staff Reporter

MLA calls for end to child labour

TUMKUR: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and Kallambella MLA K.S. Kiran Kumar, on Saturday asked Muslims to send their children to school and desist from sending them to work.

Inaugurating classrooms built under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan scheme of the Union Government at Yakub Sab Palya in the district, Mr. Kiran Kumar said many Muslim families were sending their children to work and denying them an opportunity to get educated. Child labour should be stopped, he said.

Killed in accident

HASSAN: One person was killed and another injured, when the motorcycle they were riding hit a gas tanker near Jogipura on the outskirts of Channarayapatna town on Saturday. The Channarayapatna town police identified the dead as Chandrashekar Beeradar of Bijapura. They said the two were going to Dharmasthala. While Beeradar died on the spot, his friend, who was seriously injured, has been admitted to Channarayapatna hospital.

Convention

DHARWAD: The Karnataka regional unit of All-India Association of Catholic Schools (AINACS-KRU) will organise a two-day convention of Catholic schools here from Sunday. Addressing presspersons on Friday, AINACS president Ann Teresa said the convention would deliberate on issues related to education based on Catholic Bishops' Conference of India mandate "Education for the marginalised". — Staff Correspondent

Film festival

CHAMARAJANAGAR: Deputy Commissioner Anwar Pasha has said a children's film festival will be organised in association with Indian Children's Film society from November 30 to December 7 in the district theatres. Presiding over a meeting here on Saturday, he said films would be screened for children studying in classes V to X in the district theatres from 8 a.m. to 9.30 a.m. Tickets are priced at Rs. 5 each. The inaugural function will be held at Simha Movie Paradise, Chamarajanagar on November 30. — Staff Correspondent

MYSORE: The authorities will conduct photography, poetry and essay writing contests on "Mysore Dasara 2006" for non-resident Indians and foreigners.
