THENI: Eleven panchayat presidents were elected unopposed in the district as no one had filed nominations against them. Talking to presspersons here on Saturday, the Collector, Rajesh Lakhoni, said the elected panchayat presidents are: Pechiammal (Theppampatti panchayat), P. Vadivu, (Kadirnarasingapuram), Chellasamy (Ettapparajapuram), Vasanthi (Singarajapuram), R. Manoharan (Thadichery), S. Velusamy (Govindhanagaram), Malaisamy (Melmangalam), Ramaraj (Koozhaiyanur), Annathurai (Iyyampatti), Pichaippan (Kamatchipuram) and Muthusamy (Poolanandhapuram). After withdrawal of 221 nominations, 819 candidates are in the fray for 177 municipal wards in Periakulam, Cumbum, Theni, Bodi and Chinnamanur municipalities and Goodalur selection-grade municipality in the district. While DMK fielded 102 candidates, AIADMK pitted 157 candidates, Congress 49, CPI(M) 17, CPI 13, PMK 7, MDMK 15 and BJP 22 for municipal council wards. About 437 independents are also in the fray. For panchayat president posts, 446 candidates are in the fray and 11 nominations were rejected.
