NEW DELHI: Migrant children come to cities like Delhi from far-off villages and remote tribal belts of the country with their work-seeking parents and become part of the slum dwelling landscape of contemporary India. Seeking to highlight the plight and lives of such unfortunate children was a four-day photo exhibition titled "Claiming Childhood" that ended at India Habitat Centre here on Saturday. Organised by Mobile Creches, a non-government organisation that provides childcare to underprivileged children at construction sites across the country, all the thought-provoking photographs by Anita Khemka on show focused on the status of a majority of the children excluded from the development process. Pictures of neglect stood in sharp contrast to what can be achieved with timely interventions. Credit should also go to Anita Khemka for her sensitive portrayal of migrant children. She has succeeded in capturing the reality of life for children on the margins, which provoke action and thought from both the State and society.
