Package inadequate: Left parties

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The agriculture package announced by the Centre is inadequate, Communist Party of India State secretary Veliyam Bhargavan has said. Mr. Bhargavan said in a statement here on Saturday that the package announced was insufficient to tackle the crisis in the agriculture sector. Janata Dal (Secular) general secretary Varughese George said that the Centre should grant more assistance. Congress(S) president Kadannapally Ramachandran said that the relief sanctioned to the State had proved that Mr. Pawar's visit to the State was a futile exercise.

Man dies of leptospirosis

Thrissur: A man died of leptospirosis in a private hospital in Kodungallur on Saturday, according to District Medical Officer M.L. Rajagopal. Kuniyankattil Rajan, 46, of Karumathra was admitted to the hospital on Friday. — Staff Reporter

Talks to end strike fail

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Talks held at the behest of Chief Minister V.S.Achuthanandan to end the strike in Lord Krishna Bank failed to reach a settlement on Saturday. The Chief Minister told the management representatives that the Government was opposed to the move to merge the bank with the Centurion Bank of Punjab and demanded that it might be deferred to end the strike. The management representatives refused to accept the suggestion. Bank officers will join a State-wide strike called by the United Forum of Bank Employees on Tuesday. — Special Correspondent

Retreat centre inspected

Thrissur: The police inspected the Divine Retreat Centre at Muringoor on Saturday following a High Court order to assess its functioning. Sources said that seven medical units in the Centre were inspected, staff interrogated and drugs examined. — Staff Reporter

PATHANAMTHITTA: Fr. Abraham Mulamoottil, principal of the Mar Athanaseus College For Advanced Studies, Thiruvalla (MACFAST), has been selected for the Mammen Mathai Memorial Award, instituted by the Thiruvalla Merchants' Association, according to an official release issued by the association here on Satruday. — Staff Reporter

Seminar on religion, politics

PATHANAMTHITTA: Former Cultural Affairs Minister G. Karthikeyan will deliver the keynote address at the seminar on `religion and politics' to be held at the District Congress Committee hall here on Monday, according to Seva Dal district chairman Vettoor Jyotiprasad. The seminar has been organised by the Seva Dal district committee in connection the Gandhi Jayanthi celebrations, he added. — Staff Reporter

Human rights forum

KOLLAM: Under the leadership of former Acting Chairman of the State Human Rights Commission S. Balaraman, a `Kerala Pouravakasha Vedi' has been constituted. At a press conference here on Saturday, Dr. Balaraman said that the Vedi will be active within the jurisdiction of the Kollam City to begin with. Vedi convener K. Bhaskaran said in connection with the launch, a symposium on solid waste management will be held at the Public Library Hall here on October 2. The symposium will be inaugurated by Kollam Deputy Mayor Veliyom Rajappan. KSSP activist George D'cruz and Thiruvananthapuram Corporation Health Officer V. Sreekumar will talk on the subject. — Staff Reporter
