THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The former Chief Minister A.K. Antony cannot escape responsibility for his failure to prevent Marad violence, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has said. The Chief Minister told presspersons here on Saturday that Mr. Antony, who had also held the Home portfolio, had ignored the warnings of the intelligence wing and failed to provide security to prevent the recurrence of violent incidents. Mr. Antony, who had demanded an apology from the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), should apologise for his lapse in failing to act on time. The onus could not be put on officials alone. The stance of Mr. Antony and the former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on the Marad issue was condemnable, he said. A section of Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leaders who allegedly had mafia links and extremist elements, including the National Development Front, were behind the violence. The Sangh Parivar also had its role. He described Mr. Antony as a prisoner of such IUML leaders.
