Elaborate arrangements made for Madikeri Dasara celebrations

Special police squads formed to maintain law and order


  • Vehicle check-posts to be set up at entry points
  • Movement of vehicles banned after 4 p.m. on Monday
  • Entry to the Abbi Falls banned from 4 p.m. on Monday to 8 a.m. on Tuesday

    Madikeri: The police have made elaborate arrangements to ensure peaceful Dasara celebrations in here on Monday. For the first time, 10 videographers will be deployed in the city to record the event with a view to maintaining law and order, Superintendent of Police, Ramachandra Rao, told The Hindu on Saturday.

    Dr. Rao said four deputy superintendents of police, 11 police inspectors, 26 sub-inspectors, 32 assistant sub-inspectors, 400 policemen, 150 personnel from Home Guards, and four companies each of KSRP and DAR would be deployed. Dog squads, a police crack team to keep track of anti-social elements, and a crime squad had been constituted. Vehicle check-posts would be set up at locations from where vehicles would enter the city. Movement of vehicles would be banned after 4 p.m. on Monday. From 6 p.m. on Monday to 8 a.m. on Tuesday, vehicles coming to Madikeri would be diverted to parking bays. Parking would not be allowed on the stretch from General Thimmayya Circle to KSRTC Bus Depot, from Kundurumotte Temple to Gandhi Mantap and Major Muthanna Circle, General Thimmayya Circle to Private Bus Stand, Indira Gandhi Circle (Chowk) to College Road and SBI Junction, Ganapathi Street and Mahadevpet, he said.

    Visitors would not be allowed to the Abbi Falls from 4 p.m. on Monday to 8 a.m. on Tuesday. No vehicle would be allowed to move around during the period. Vehicles proceeding from Mangalore to Mysore and Mysore to Mangalore would be allowed to ply till the commencement of procession of decorated cars in the city, he said.

    Vehicles coming to the city from the eastern side would have to take Sampigekatte, Gaddige, Convent Junction and Race Course Road, those coming from the western side and proceeding towards the eastern side would have to take the same road to enter Mysore Road. Public entry to the Fort through its front side would not be allowed to make the road one-way, he said.

    Vehicles coming from the Mysore side could be parked at the Junior College Ground and those coming from the Siddapur, Virajpet and Mangalore directions could be parked at the APMC Yard.

    Vehicles coming from the Somwarpet, Galibeedu, and Kalur areas could be parked at the Sports Authority of India Ground and Muthappa Temple Ground. Those coming from the Virajpet side could be parked near the Government Hospital. Two-wheelers could be parked at the Shanti Church Ground, he said.

    Over 500 policemen would be deployed at Gonicoppa in South Kodagu to ensure peaceful Dasara celebrations, Mr. Rao said.

    Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav has banned the sale of liquor here and at Gonicoppa from 9 a.m. on Monday to 9 a.m. on Tuesday in view of the Dasara festivities.
