Congress opposes building of Velu Thampi Dalawa complex

Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: District Congress Committee (DCC) president Sooranad Rajashekaran on Saturday alleged that a health centre for the financially backward in a colony at Nanthrikkal was razed to the ground to accommodate the Velu Thampi Dalawa Cultural Complex, the stone for which will be laid by Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee on Wednesday.

In a statement here, Mr. Rajashekaran said the Nanthrikkal complex humiliated both Velu Thampi Dalawa and the Kundara Vilambara Memorial. The statement by Minister for Culture M.A. Baby that the Nanthrikkal complex would in no way erode the importance of the memorial at Elampallur was insincere, he alleged. While the Cultural Affairs Department had allocated Rs.15 lakh for the complex, only Rs.1 lakh was alloted for the memorial at Elampallur.
