BSNL plans to augment cellular coverage

Special Correspondent

ONGOLE: The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) plans to complete construction of 38 more cellular towers in the district this year to augment its coverage.

Speaking to newspersons here on Saturday on the occasion of its sixth anniversary celebrations, General Manager P. Padmanabham said that 48 towers were working in the district now, covering only 32 out of 56 mandals. They could not provide a corridor either on the NH 5 or the Chennai-Vijayawada railway track. There were some dark patches even in Ongole town. He hoped that the cellular coverage would improve once additional towers become operational.

There were 57 villages with a population exceeding 5,000 and 217 villages with a population exceeding 2,000 that need to be provided cellular coverage in the district. The district needed 55 more towers to achieve complete coverage, he said. Broadband facility had been provided in Ongole and Chirala towns and the facility would be extended to Kandukur and Markapur soon.
