Finance Commission report presented

CHENNAI: The report of the Third State Finance Commission was submitted to Governor Surjit singh Barnala on Saturday.

A copy of the report was also presented to Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi.

Chairman of the Commission M.A.Gowrishankar said the Government, after studying the report, would table it in the Assembly along with an action taken report.

The decision of the Government would take effect from April 1, 2007 for a period of five years, he added.

The Commission was constituted by the Government in December 2004 to decide on the quantum of State taxes to be devolved to the local bodies in the rural and urban areas.

It held discussions with Collectors, district panchayat presidents, Mayors of Corporations, Chairpersons of municipalities, panchayat presidents and representatives of political parties and others for a period of 21 months.

Feedback was obtained from them on the questionnaire provided to them, he said.
