CHENNAI: Speakers at a meeting on Saturday paid tributes to philanthropist, educationist and industrialist Annamalai Chettiar on the occasion of his 126th birth anniversary. Presenting the "Dr.Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar Birthday Commemoration Award" to Bharatanatyam exponent Krishnakumari Narendran, former Vice-Chancellor of Annamalai University and Madurai Kamaraj University, S.V. Chittibabu, described Chettiar as a legendary figure, who rose to a high position through hard work and service to society. He also recalled Annamalai Chettiar's contribution to spreading Tamil music all over the State. He had believed in meticulous thoroughness while carrying out his responsibilities. "Strive, save and serve" was his motto. B.M.Hegde, president, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mangalore, said Annamalai Chettiar was immortalised by his philanthropy. Referring to his contribution to education, he said he gave his hard-earned money for establishing Annamalai University, in contrast to those who tried to commercialise education. M.A.M.Ramaswamy, Pro-Chancellor of Annamalai University and patron of Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar Memorial Trust, said the award instituted by the trust was given every year for a person who rendered yeoman service to Tamil Isai and Bharatanatyam. It carried a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh and a citation. Ms.Narendran is director, Abinaya Natyalaya in Chennai.
