CHENNAI: G.L. Arun Kumar has got an award for his scientific video film in the young ophthalmologists category at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons Congress (ESCRS) in London this month. Dr. Kumar, consultant ophthalmologist at a city hospital, won the third prize for his film that studies heat generation during cataract surgery performed with ultrasound energy with the latest `keyhole' technique. The study was performed with a very sensitive infrared thermal camera. Dr. Kumar has expressed pride in the fact that the study was conducted with Indian equipment and that international surgeons have begun to recognise the efforts of the Indian medical community. Delegates from across the world attended the 24th ESCRS, with participants from Taiwan and Germany winning the first and second prizes for their scientific video films in the junior ophthalmologist category. Awards were given for the best videos in the cataract and refractive categories through the 2006 ESCRS/Alcon Video Competition. The study submitted by Dr. Kumar was also appreciated last year at the International Conference at the Fyodorov's Eye Institute in Moscow, Russia.
