Chennai: Almost one-third of the candidates who filed their nominations for the Chennai Corporation Council elections (October 13) have withdrawn from the race, putting the total number of contestants at 1,326. Electoral officers compiled the final list of candidates late on Saturday night, after allotting symbols to each contestant. The lists, with the names in the alphabetical order, would be posted for public viewing in all the Corporation zonal offices by the early hours of Sunday, an official said. Nominations that were received for the local body polls in Chennai totalled 1,935 but 26 were rejected. Also, 583 candidates withdrew their nominations by Saturday. Candidates of the Congress party, which did not release its official list till late on Friday night, were finally brought out of the confusion that reigned in the past three days. Many of the Congress candidates who had gone ahead with their nominations had to withdraw when the official list came. The zone-wise (1 to 10) details of the number of candidates contesting in the polls are as follows: Tondiarpet - 107; Basin Bridge - 149; Pulianthope - 144; Ayanavaram - 153; Kilpauk - 120; Ice House - 134; Nungambakkam - 131; Kodambakkam - 134; Saidapet - 118 and Adyar - 136. The ten Corporation zones of Chennai have a total of 155 divisions with about 34 lakh voters.
