A police booth and control room are part of the initiatives

CHENNAI: A new police booth will be set up at the junction of Ranganathan Street-Usman Road. It will have a mini control room, a police release said.

The booth and the control room are part of the security arrangements made by the police at T. Nagar in view of the festival season.

Barricades have been put up on Usman Road and Ranganathan Street to allow free movement of pedestrians. Closed-circuit television cameras on both roads will monitor the movement of people. Plainclothes men and women will patrol the busy roads. They will also be posted at the textiles complexes. Special teams have been formed to prevent untoward incidents, the release said.

Watchtowers are set up at four places on Usman Road and at two places on Thyagaraya Road from where a police team monitor the movement of people, using binoculars.

Home Guards

The law enforcing authorities plan to rope in the services of Home Guards. About 100 school students volunteered to help the police in regulating the crowd. Traders agreed to appoint 50 persons to provide security. Students and volunteers will be provided with uniform.

The textiles showroom owners have been advised by the police to obtain a stability certificate from the Public Works Department and a quality assurance certificate from the Inspector of Lifts. Shops should be provided with emergency exits and separate space should be created for entry and exit of visitors. All transactions should be recorded, using a CCTV.

Installation of fire extinguishers, space for parking vehicles of customers, avoiding cooking on the top floor of the buildings, systematic removal of garbage from near the shops, display of products on Ranganathan Street on the shop premises, as per the Madras High Court direction, and disallowing encroachments on Usman Road are some of the other instructions given to the traders, the release added.
