A record 8,126 metric tonnes was handled in a single shift on Thursday during the second shift surpassing the earlier record of 6,372 metric tonnes handled on September 24 last year. M.v. Astra called on the port on Thursday carrying 32,290 metric tonnes of coal from South Africa for M/s Bhatia International, Indore, for distribution in Karnataka. According to a press release from S. Gopalakrishna, traffic manager, NMPT, container traffic at the port is also doing well. During the first half of the current fiscal there was an increase of 86 per cent in container traffic. The frequency of container vessels calling on the port has increased to one vessel a week. This would help the trade to move their cargo faster to the respective destinations at less ocean freight charges. P. Tamilvanan, chairman, NMPT, while expressing his happiness over the achievements with stakeholders said employees would receive productivity-linked bonus of 17.5 per cent on ad-hoc basis for 2005-06.
