More `santhara' cases reported in Rajasthan

Jaipur: Two days after a Jain woman died here by observing `santhara' — a ritual fast-unto-death — the fourth case in Rajasthan of a member of the community beginning the ritual has come to light even as the State awaits the Rajasthan High Court's decision on the issue.

Dhanni Devi, 85, of Bikaner district began observing `santhara' 16 days ago after suffering from a severe back problem for the last nine months, her son said. State Home Minister Gulabchand Kataria said the Government was waiting for the court's decision on a petition seeking a ban on `santhara' and would abide by its directives.

According to Dhanni's son it is a common ritual and all those in poor health and suffering from incurable diseases prefer to observe this. "Why is the media creating such a hype over it?" — PTI
