`It is a recognition for struggles of the poor'

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The struggles and issues of the urban poor, Dalits, marginalised women and the unorganised sector have got recognition through this award, said Ruth Manorama, Bangalore-based social activist and general secretary of Women's Voice, who has been chosen for the Right Livelihood award (also called the Alternative Nobel) this year.

Speaking to presspersons here on Saturday, she said, "I want to focus on new issues such as caste discrimination and the disparity and unemployment created by liberalisation and consumerism. The poor and marginalised women need recognition and the right to live in dignity, which they are being deprived of. With this recognition, my work will be respected and will get intensified," she said.

She said violence against women was on the rise and she would focus on this issue also.

Ms. Manorama said the prize money from the award would be used to set up a centre for women by Women's Voice.
