Session offered nothing for people: Congress

Special Correspondent

`Government did not make any key announcement'

Congress stand
  • Session sent a strong signal to Maharashtra on Belgaum issue
  • People will agitate if the Government fails to keep it promises

BANGALORE: The Congress on Saturday alleged that the special session of the legislature, which concluded on Friday in Belgaum, has failed to fulfil the aspirations of the people of north Karnataka.

"The Government has neither announced any package for removal of regional imbalances nor any made special announcement for development of the region," said Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president M. Mallikarjun Kharge.

Mr. Kharge told presspersons that the party that the session had sent a strong signal about unity on border issue to Maharashtra. But the five-day session was a futile exercise as the Government had failed to respond to the grievances of the people of the region. Chief Minster H.D. Kumaraswamy should have announced a special package and earmarked funds for execution of development works in the region, he said.

By holding the session, the Government passed the supplementary budget and four bills, including Office-of-profit Bill.

The people would agitate soon if the promises made by the Government were not implemented, Mr. Kharge said.

He thanked the Centre for announcing Rs. 16,978-crore package for four States, including Rs 2,689 crore for Karnataka.

The package would benefit farmers in Belgaum, Hassan, Kodagu, Chikmagalur, Chitradurga and Shimoga districts.

Mr. Kharge said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi have responded to the memorandum submitted by the Congress delegation last month.
